Nation in Image: Symbols that Shape Nations

                                               Symbols that Shape Nations

This activity introduces students to how nations use visual symbols and personifications to express identity, unity, and political values. By examining global examples and comparing them with Abanindranath Tagore’s Bharat Mata, learners explore how imagery shapes nationalism and deepen their understanding of the Bharatiya concept of Rāṣṭra.

  1. Identify images and by using references complete the table

(Support Independent Learning, Comparison & analysis)

2. Compare the above images with Abanindranath Tagore’s image of Bharat Mata. How does it reflect Indian values? (Analysis & synthesis)

3. How does the practice of personifying nations—often through female figures—shape our
understanding of national identity? What political and cultural ideas influence this choice? (Encourage Critical Understanding)

4. How do visual symbols, such as national personifications, shape public emotions and collective identity during times of crisis (e.g., war, revolution, or political transition)? (Foster Curiosity and Inquiry)

5. In a globalized and multicultural world, how relevant are traditional national personifications today? Should new, more inclusive symbols emerge to represent diverse democratic societies? (Promote Civic Awareness)

6.  Bharat Mata is often depicted as a mother-goddess and Vande Mataram as a patriotic hymn. How have these symbols influenced Indian nationalism, especially during the freedom struggle? How do they continue to shape Indian identity and unity today in a culturally and religiously diverse nation?
Discuss how the concept of Rāṣṭra is a more evolved idea than the term “nation.”
(Indian-Rooted with Interdisciplinary Connections)

7. Design your own national personification or symbol that could represent Bharat (Creative Application Task)

Draw or describe it.

Explain the symbols you choose and the values or ideas they represent.

Describe how your symbol would inspire unity and pride.

Think & conclude:   Reflective driving question

How do national symbols—especially Bharat Mata and Vande Mataram—shape the way people imagine the idea of Rāṣṭra? In what ways can such imagery support the vision of Akhand Bharat and inspire the collective responsibility needed for building a Viksit Bharat?

Vande Guru Parampara

Vande Guru Parampara Guru Purnima – Honouring Our Gurus, Upholding the Tradition इमं विवस्वते योगं प्रोत्कवानहमव्ययम् । विवस्वान् मनवे प्राह मनुरिक्ष्वाकवेऽब्रवीत । । (४-१) In the Bhagavad Gita, while advising Arjuna, Lord Krishna gives an example of the tradition of knowledge. He says, “I imparted this indestructible Yoga to the Sun (Vivasvan), who passed it on to Manu, and Manu, in turn, passed it on to Ikshvaku.” In the Indian tradition, whenever new knowledge or philosophy is presented, the legacy of the Guru's tradition is also acknowledged—because knowledge flourishes only when its lineage is preserved and passed on. Jnana Prabodhini has accepted four great personalities—Samarth Ramdas, Swami Dayananda, Swami Vivekananda, and Yogi Arvind—as its visionaries, and pathfinders who have shaped Jnana Prabodhini ideals and direction. Today, let us learn about Samarth Ramdas. The poet Vaman Pandit praises him with the following verse. शुकासारखे पूर्ण वैराग्य ज्याचे...
